Galactus possesses cosmic power beyond the abilities of human beings to measure. He requires unknown energies obtainable only from a certain type of planet in order to sustain his life. Galactus is also telepathic, able to scan the thoughts of any mind.

Galactus arrives on Earth after the Skrulls departure. As the world devouring was setting up the contraption with which he would feed on the energy of the planet, he met opposition from Earth's human inhabitants who had recently defeated his herald Terrax the Tamer. In this final battle, it was the Banner Beast who was to deliver the coup de grace to the planet eater, an antimatter bomb, but was blown too far from Galactus to get at him in time, leaving it all up to the Exile called Thunderbird.

Proudstar successfully plunges the device into Galactus' armor. When it exploded, it set off a chain reaction that engulfed the power that took up residence inside Galactus' shell and burned the imposing mammoth from within. Finding a new level of agony that transcends his constant state of unendurable pain from hunger, Galactus flees from the fight thinking that there are other worlds that are less trouble.
