Dr. Heather McDaniel completed her rigorous medical training in her mid-twenties and became one of the most sought out scientific minds in the world. Her range of research experience involved everything from gene-splicing to anthropological analysis of the human condition. After an an accidental explosion in her laboratory during a cancer research experiment involving gamma rays, Heather found herself with the ability to change into the mythical creature known as the Sasquatch. Following this miraculous turn of events, Heather joined the fledgling operation known as Alpha Flight, a team of super-powered beings that would concentrate on Canadian interests. Heather was excited by both the challenge this oppurtunity provided and by the chance to finally be able to fully utilize all of her talents at once.
Her first assignment was to Project Lazarus, an attempt to bring a madman they had found in the woods with enhanced mutant abilities back to reality. Although it took a month to wrestle the man who would be called Logan from his stupor, the time spent was well worth it as he would prove to be not only an asset, but also a leader for the newborn Alpha Flight as the Wolverine.
Through their interaction on the team, Heather and Logan grew to become close friends and eventually into lovers. Within a year, the two were happily married and, with James Hudson leading the charge, they would be the strong foundation from which Alpha Flight would be built upon. Two years later, a dormant chip hidden in Logan's adrenal gland was activated, causing the wild man to go insane. It was Heather who would finally stop him. She mourned the loss of the first man she ever loved for years before James Hudson brought her back from the brink and helped her find a new life within the old. Although she would marry Hudson and enjoy her newfound happiness, she still missed Logan very much. With Wolverine gone, Heather Hudson took on the role of field leader in addition to her regular duties as chief medical officer and monstrous brute of the Canadian super team Alpha Flight. She would eventually find herself in the company of a man calling himself the Timebroker. He explained to her that she had become unhinged from time as a chain of events had caused her realities as she knew it to change.
New events in Heather's past would cause the person she loves the most in the world to burn to death if she did not complete her timeline. In order to return to her correct timeline, she would have to join a band of dimension hopping super-beings known as the Exiles and help repair other realities that caused the ripple effect that disrupted her reality or else return to her new, unfortunate alternate existence.
On a world taken over by Sentinels, the Exiles met up with another reality-hopping team called Weapon X in Florida. The warm climate prompts Heather to revert to human form which surprises both sides. On most worlds, Sasquatch is the alter ego of Walter Langkowksi and not by the wife of James Hudson, who is a caucasian in most realities. The two teams are shocked that Sasquatch is a black woman.
Heather is a rational skeptic who is very protective of her teammates, as was first evident by her reluctance to work alongside the unnerving, amoral Weapon X who would later clash with the Exiles. When the team visited a reality where creatures called Vi-Locks had infected the world with an evolved version of the Legacy Virus, Heather would again try to save the team from any unnecessary harm. The Avengers concluded that the only pragmatic solution to preventing the Warlock Virus from spreading any further was to crash a plane of nuclear explosives into the Vi-Locks' own store of nuclear reserves and Nocturne volunteered to go on the kamikazee run . Heather vehemently objected to the notion, but was eventually shot down by the majority. It is perhaps this same constant protective behavior that has led Heather to surmise that the Timebroker is not all he appears to be.
When the Exiles defeated a Union Jack who they inadvertantly helped become the Vampire King of his timeline, Union Jack cast an incantation as the Exiles began teleporting to their next dimension that caused the Exiles to be split apart into multiple smaller factions on different worlds in different times. Sasquatch and Morph would be derailed without the Tallus, separated from their teammates, and stuck in an alternate reality Canada where they find themselves face-to-face with a Wolverine who is at his absolute worse, recently escaped from the Weapon X Program, and, at the moment, more animal than man. After discerning that Morph has no scent for Wolverine to track him by, Heather knocks Morph out cold and hides him underneath a pile of leaves, leaving her free to take on the rabid Wolverine without having to worry about Morph's safety. Heather faces the possibility of having to kill her first love a second time. After some time, Wolverine is able to catch up with Heather. But, as Wolverine moves in to finish his prey, he senses something that causes him to hesitate and halts him dead in his tracks. Heather reverts to her human form and approaches Logan, who goes with his instincts and welcomes her in an embrace. Heather subtly puts her hands around Logan's neck and slowly changes back into her Sasquatch form, but before she is able to do anything, she feels a tingling behind her eyes, the same as it always is before the Exiles teleport away, and she is thankful because, if Logan decided to attack a second later, she doesn't know what she would have done.
The next time the Exiles ran into Weapon X, they were told by the Tallus that, of the two teams that are here, the twelve people from Exiles and Weapon X, only six would move on and the rest must die. The Exiles newest member Magik, became obssessed with abiding by the instructions of the Tallus in order to move on and repair her timeline. As a result, Magik drew her Soulsword and attempted to kill Nocturne. However, Heather caught Magik in the act and pushed Nocturne out of the way, suffering a fatal wound while still in human form in the process. With Heather on the brink of death and left with no other practical alternatives, Nocturne possesses Heather and attempts to trigger her Sasquatch transformation so her healing powers can repair the damage done. Fortunately, this works and Heather survives this near death experience.
