Mary Jane Watson had a massive crush on her first-grade teacher and kept telling people that she was going to marry her. At the time, she was still young enough that it was considered cute, but it set off a few warning to her folks that she was gay.
Her sexual preference would not be the only thing that differentiated M.J. from her peers as she would discover that she had super powers. Not letting those abilities go to waste, she became a member of the Avengers. While fighting against the Vi-Locks, a techno-organic race of being transformed from a strand of an evolved Legacy Virus, the Avengers would find allies who were not of their own reality: The Exiles. M.J. would have an affair with one of the members of the Exiles, Sunfire. But once the Exiles aided in creation of a successful vaccine for the Vi-Lock population, Sunfire was forced to leave and M.J. was sure she would never see Mariko again.
However, Sunfire was unexpectedly thrown back on to the Legacy Planet when an incantation was placed on the Exiles that split them apart onto different worlds. Sunfire and Spider-Woman decide to make the most of their time together and continue their relationship. Mary would overhear Nocturne, another stranded member of the Exiles, warning Mariko to be careful with their relationship because their stay would eventually end and Mariko would have to leave behind someone that she loves. T.J. advised Mariko to be realistic and not prolong her relationship with Mary.
Mary believed T.J. to be reasonable and was ready to break up with Mariko. Nonetheless, Sunfire was unwilling to give up on their relationship and told Mary that this was the happiest she had ever been in her life. She finally felt like she has a place in the world and she didn't want to let go of that. Together, Mary and Mariko decided to continue their relationship for however long it would last, for fifty years or ten minutes, for better or for worse. Things carried on routine and conventional up until a displeasing mission with the Avengers nearly two weeks later. As Mary prepared to ditch their mission debriefing to take a bath, Mariko was abruptly wisped away when whatever caused Nocturne and Sunfire to return to the Legacy Planet righted itself and put them back on course.
