Nightcrawler is a mutant with the ability to teleport himself and a certain amount of additional mass which is in contact with him by displacing himself into another dimension and then returning to his own dimension at a certain distance from his point of departure. When he disappears in teleporting, Nightcrawler leaves behind smoke with a stench reminiscent of burning brimstone.

In our reality, Kurt Wagner was raised by members of a traveling circus. When the circus was bought by a Texas millionaire, the owner intended to move Wagner into the freak show. Appalled, Nightcrawler quit and made his way towards Winzeldorf, Germany, where his best friend Stefan had gone mad and brutally slain several children. Wagner found Stefan, hoping to stop his rampage, but, in the course of a struggle, unintentionally broke Stefan's neck. The villagers of Winzeldorf saw Nightcrawler and assumed him to be a demon and responsible for the child killings. They were about to kill him when they were all psionically paralyzed by Professor Charles Xavier, who had come to recruit Wagner into the X-Men. Nightcrawler joined the X-Men for years and would leave to become a founding member of the British-based team Excalibur, but eventually return to the X-Men after Excalibur disbanded.
