The Sentinels are androids, created expressly for the purpose of hunting, capturing, and in some cases killing mutants in order to protect the human populace. They are equipped with mutant-tracking sensors, lasers, catchwebs, disintegrator beams and other various and deadly weapons. In addition, Sentinels are self-adapting, learning and modifying themselves after every encounter.

In our reality, Sentinels were originally created by noted anthropologist Bolivar Trask. These semi-humanoid robots tasked with the apprehension or elimination of mutants were publicly revealed during a live, televised debate on the alleged mutant menace with Professor Charles Xavier, telepathic leader of the mutant adventurers known as the X-Men. The Sentinels were programmed to protect mankind from mutants, but cold logic led them to conclude that they could best accomplish this aim by seizing control of society from the imperfect humans and the Alpha Sentinel, Master Mold, attempted to force Trask to construct more of its kind. After a thought-reading probe on the X-Man called Beast made Trask realized that not all mutants would inevitably use their powers to subjugate humanity, he sacrificed his life to destroy Master Mold. Bolivar Trask's death would cause his son to spearhead the construction of Mark II Sentinels, wrongly blaming the X-Men for his father's fate. Though the young Trask met the same fate as his father, future production of newer model Sentinels would continue by the likes of Stephan Lang and Bastion.

022) Night of the Sentinels (Patrolling The Grounds)
Appearances: 12, 13
After the Mutant Registration Act was passed, the creation of an army of giant mechanical warriors was green-lit and the Sentinels were born. At first, mutants all over the globe were massacred, then all beings with greater powers were targeted, before any and all people with even the remotest genetic indicator of possible mutant or advanced human abilities were removed from society. An armada of Sentinels had imprisoned the world, including the few who stood guard over a compound that held David Richards, a child who would grow to be the most powerful being ever born on Earth... if he grows up.

064) King Hyperion (Project Wideawake)
Appearances: 39
With the tremendous success of Project Wideawake and its full endorsement by President Robert Kelly, the Avengers were deemed unnecessary despite the lobbying Democrats best efforts. They were all exterminated by the Sentinels who replaced them as the United States first line of defense. Plans to complete a prototype for a spaceborne Sentinel were in place, but would never see fruition after the Core Mind of the Sentinels in the Pentagon was destroyed by Hyperion who eliminated the Sentinels as part of his plan to overtake the Earth.
