Shadowcat possesses the ability to pass through solid matter by passing her atoms through the spaces between the atoms of the object through which she is moving in a process called phasing. When Shadowcat is phasing, she is, for all intents ad purposes, intangible. Hence, when attacked, she can shift into a phasing state so as to allow oncoming projectiles to pass through her harmlessly.

In our reality, Katherine "Kitty" Pryde was an X-Man for some time before becoming a founding member of the British-based team of adventurers Excalibur . She was also be recruited to become a temporary S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, but would subsequently returned to Excalibur, where she remained as a valued member until they disbanded. Since then, Shadowcat returned to the United States and the X-Men . Following the tragic death of Colossus, and too many loved ones before him, Kitty left the team to find a new way to help realize Xavier's dream of peaceful coexistence between man and mutant. That road led her to a life away from the front lines of genetic conflict at an unnamed university, where she would be free to pursue her own destiny.

001) Nocturne's Reality (New Mutant)
Appearances: 1, 41, 42
Shadowcat has been plucked from the past just days after she first enrolled at Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters. She swapped places with her future self during a Chronal Schism caused by an exploding disruptor created by Apocalypse and destroyed by the X-Men. With the loss of her beloved Aunt Kate, Nocturne takes this new Kitty Pryde under her wing and helps her get acquainted to her new surroundings. Shadowcat's perky disposition masks a mounting insecurity over her place with these new X-Men, facing a claustrophobic, protective mentor in Wolverine, and teammates who seem to expect more of her than she is capable of.

This Shadowcat also appears in the 2000 edition of X-Men Millenial Visions.

005) Mimic's Reality (Looking On)
Appearances: 14
Shadowcat was one of this reality's X-Men.

064) King Hyperion (Nine Lives)
Appearances: 38, 39, 40
The only one of the X-Men to survive an attack on the Xavier Institute by the Sentinels. In this reality, Weapon X would move on to their next mission once all the mutants on the planet were dead. Because Hyperion had plans to stay on this world and rule as king, Shadowcat was spared and helped guide some of the members of Weapon X to Storm City where Storm had created a safe haven for herself from the Sentinels. Once Weapon X learned of the asteroid that Magneto had released to destroy the Earth, Vanisher teleported Storm, Weapon X, and the remaining Brotherhood to Asteroid M where they would stay while Hyperion and Rogue attempted to stop the descending rock before it impacted. However, the two would fail and once Hyperion arrived at Asteroid M, the remaining mutants of this world were killed. Shadowcat attempted to hide herself and Colossus from Hyperion, but they were discovered and sucked out into space after Hyperion blasted through the ship's hull.
