Sunfire was raised in a very strict household. Her parents demanded that she get straight A's and excel in music by playing the piano and violin. They insisted that she only apply herself in areas that furthered her education before she was expected to marry, settle down, and have children. Mariko discovered early on in her life that she was different from other people. When was thirteen, she told her best friend that she was in love with her, but those same feelings were not reciprocated. When her mutant powers manifested themselves, her mother and father saw it as a great shame and refused to ler her explore them. As she grew older, Mariko became more spirited and rebellious. She began voicing her dissent and the arguments that ensued with her parents inevitably led her to flee Japan and come to America. Two days after she first set foot on American soil, Professor Charles Xavier found her and invited her to join the X-Men where she would find a second family. Despite her new role as a public figure, her parents still frowned on Mariko and disowned her, not only for the new life she had chosen in America and for being a mutant, but also for her sexual orientation. Being a lesbian did not play back home in Tokyo. At some point, Sunfire found herself in the company of a man calling himself the Timebroker. He explained to her that she had become unhinged from time as a chain of events had caused her realities as she knew it to change. New events in Sunfire's past caused her powers to manifested as uncontrollable atomic radiation. In order to return to her correct timeline, she would have to help repair other realities that caused the ripple effect that disrupted her reality or else return to her new, unfortunate alternate existence.
When Sunfire joined the team after the Exiles lost a member for the first time, Morph aided Mariko in adjusting chaotic lifestyle by helping her see the lighter side of every situation. The two formed a close relationship and Morph began to develop stronger feelings for Sunfire outside of friendship. In time, Mariko would reveal to Morph that she was a lesbian and had hesitated to tell him because she had a hunch about how he felt for her and didn't want to hurt his feelings. Morph took the news amazingly well, reacting in a sensible manner and they would continue the best platonic relationship in the team.
On a romp to a world where the Legacy Virus has eclipsed the Black Plague before evolving into an even deadlier virus, Sunfire had an affair with Mary Jane Watson who served as the Spider-Woman in the Avengers of that world.
When the Exiles visited a reality where they would clash with a Captain America who had been transformed into the Nosferatu and killed Baron Blood to assume the title of Vampire King, Mariko was bitten by one of his Cursed Avengers and was rapidly changing into a Vampire. With the help of the current Union Jack, the Exiles were able to cure Mariko by slaying Captain America, thus severing the bloodline of her maker. Although Crichton aided the Exiles
in preventing Sunfire from transforming into a Vampire, he had an ulterior motive for slaying Captain America. When Crichton and Captain America last met, Crichton was turned into a Vampire himself and , with Captain America now dead, Crichton becamse the rightful heir to the mantle of Vampire King by way of his Great-Uncle, Baron Blood. At his moment of ascension, he was incinerated by a revitalized Sunfire. Just as the Exiles began teleporting to their next dimension, Crichton's slowly burning body had enough energy left to cast an incantation that caused the Exiles to be split apart into multiple smaller factions on different worlds in different times.
Nocturne and Sunfire teleported into the middle of nowhere without their teammates and, before long, they realize that they were back on the Legacy Planet. After some time, it became evident that they would be stranded in this dimensions indefinitely and Nocturne and Sunfire joined the Avengers in their efforts to cure the remaining infected Vi-Lock population. The newly reunited Sunfire and Spider-Woman decided to make the most of this fortunate turn of events by spending as much time as they could together and continue their relationship. After Nocturne noticed that Sunfire and Spider-Woman were falling in love, she pulled Mariko aside to warn her to be careful. Eventually, their stay there would end and Mariko would have to leave behind someone that she loves. T.J. advised Mariko to be realistic and not prolong her relationship with Mary.
Four days later, Mary let loose that she overheard T.J. and Mariko's conversation and, after some thought, was not too sure that Nocturne was wrong in her beliefs. Nonetheless, Sunfire is unwilling to give up on their relationship and tells Mary that this is the happiest she has ever been in her life. She finally feels like she has a place in the world and doesn't want to let go of that. Together, Mary and Mariko decide to continue with their relationship for however long it will last, for fifty years or ten minutes, for better or for worse. Things carry on routine and conventional up until a displeasing mission with the Avengers nearly two weeks later. As Mary prepares to ditch their mission debriefing to take a bath, Mariko is abruptly wisped away when whatever caused Nocturne and Sunfire to return to the Legacy Planet righted itself and put them back on course.
The Exiles then visited a world where the Thing turned into a psychotic monster, Mimic had suffered severe injuries while battling the Thing when he was hit hard while not in Steel Form. He had hidden from his teammates the fact that he had been infected with a Brood egg on the last alternate reality he visited while separated from the team. With his Healing Factor under strain, working to repair his current injuries, the Brood egg was able to slowly take him over. Sunfire and her teammates were now forced to fight their most powerful member and their leader.
While engaged in combat with Calvin, Mariko dodged an Optic Blast that was meant for her and it instead hit a building. The falling debris would have crushed a crowd of people if Sunfire hadn't intervened. However, because she had expended so much energy fighting Mimic, she was not able to disintegrate all of the crumbling building in time. Although she was able to save the lives of many, it would have to be at the sacrifice her own as Mariko Yashida was buried alive beneath the debris.
Her passing would affect her teammate Morph the most. His angst towards Mimic, whom he held responsible for Mariko's death, would drive a wedge between the two for some time. The two would later reconcile and Mimic went took a vow to not kill again to atone for this and past transgressions.
Note: The data provided for Sunfire's mutant powers are given under the assumption that her abilties are near the level of that of her cousin in the mainstream Marvel Universe, Shiro Yoshida, who also took on the codename of Sunfire with the X-Men.

In our reality, if Mariko Yashida possessed any mutant powers, they never manifested themselves. She was Wolverine's only true love and took control of the Yashida clan after her father Shingen's death. During that time, she tried to free her house of all of the debts to the Yakuza that her father had incurred. She was engaged to marry Logan, but Mastermind made her reject him. After Mastermind's effects wore off, Mariko still refused to marry, not because Logan wasn't good enough for her, but because she felt that until her clan was disassocited from the underworld, she wasn't worthy of him. Unfortunately, Mariko was poisoned by Reiko, an assassin for the Yakuza, and pleaded with Wolverine to give her a swift death. She died in her beloved's arms. The Mariko that appears in the Exiles roster apparently has had no intimate relations whatsoever with the Logan that exists in her reality.
